I’ve started running again. Sort of. I use to run quite a bit but lately I’ve been… lazy. Also I have a problem with my knees. Actually I don’t think it’s my knees at all. My hypothesis, based on nothing but a rudimentary understanding of kinesiology, is that my IT band is really tight up near my hip and pulling on the sides of knees giving me pain in the outside ligaments. It’s really frustrating that my cardio and legs are fine but my knees give out way to early.
Every time Rachel leaves for a run I feel like a broken down old man. You shouldn’t feel that way at 29. So— I’ve started running to the pain a couple times a week. It’s not much of a work out for the rest of my body but I’m trying to slowly build up the distances before my knees get all achy breaky. Running just until I can feel some significant discomfort and then walking home. [the loop around the neighborhood keeps the walk home short but the run boring] And that way my knees aren’t shot for the rest of the day and I can still function with a modicum of respectability.
Are you stretching before and after your run? I find that this type of pain will go away quickly if you stretch frequently, giving your knees some relief…. (talking from experience…
)
Yeah, Ive been making sure I spend a good amount of time stretching but I’m having trouble getting a good stretch along my IT Band up the outside of my legs. So I’m doing the best I can to work it slowly. Seems to be improving.
