The Trouble with Palms
// October 4th, 2007 // random
I don’t understand what is happening here. My little palm tree that I have had, healthy and presumably happy for over a year, is now on the verge of death. I have asked for help and been offered the least helpful comments I could imagine… have you watered it? Is it getting enough sunlight? Oh right, water and sunlight, how could I have forgotten those less than obvious options. For the record, yes it has water (not too much, in fact exactly the same amount I have given it for the past year) and sunlight in equal measure as well. Perhaps, as all things, palm trees too must pass.
A friend recently wanted to buy a watch that had, across its face, “remember, you will die”. Morbid but true. Perhaps my palm tree has become my watch.
I am sad.

as a master plantsmith I offer 3 suggestions.
1. move your plant further from the window…
temperature variation can cause plants stress.
2. add some fertilizer to the water you are giving the plant.
(I have some you can borrow)
3. Re-pot the plant.
Actually I juts moved it closer to the window for the picture
but I will try the second
and then perhaps the third
suggestion
pluck the old leaves so the strnegth stays in the root and other leaves
I’ve been trying to…
but all of a sudden they are dying too quickly for me to keep up with.
The first comment from Joe is exactly what I would recommend. Re-pot the Palm with new dirt, give it fertilizer/plant food when watering it and you should see a difference in a couple of weeks…. I had the joy of reviving a few sick plants in my day and this definitely works…
using distilled water reduces the salt content which could be the cause of the leaves turning color and dropping off. Try the website http://junglemusic.net/palmadvice/palms-houseplants1.htm
